Solution

Chromosome 11 is responsible for the formation of beta globin and chromosome 16 for the formation of alpha globin. Hence, defects in these genes leads to deficiency in the formation of alpha and beta globin chains. This causes the disease thalassemia. Anaemia (caused as a result of destruction of RBC's ) and deformities in bone formation leading to slower growth and development are two of the symptoms associated with the disease.
