Question

Chlorine, Y, and iodine form a Dobereiner's triad. Identify the atomic weight of Y?

Open in App
Solution

  • Dobereiner's basic opinion is that some elements with comparable chemical characteristics can be grouped together. When these comparable elements are positioned in ascending order of their atomic masses, they usually form a group of three, with the center element's atomic mass equal to the arithmetic mean of the other two elements. Triads were the name for a collection of three components.
  • As a result of this law, when the elements are ordered by increasing atomic mass, a group of three elements with similar qualities known as triads is formed, with the atomic mass of the middle element equal to the arithmetic mean of the other two elements.
  • Chlorine, Y, and lodine form Dobereiner's triad. Thus, the atomic weight of Y is the average atomic weight of Chlorine and Iodine. The atomic weight of Chlorine = 35.5. The atomic weight of iodine =127.
  • Thus, the atomic weight of Y is 35.5+1272=81.25a.m.u
