Choose acidic and neutral oxides from the following:

Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide, Nitrous oxide, Sulphur dioxide.

Solution

Acidic oxide- when reacted with water gives an acid

When Carbon dioxide reacts with water it produces Carbonic acid (H2CO3)

  • CO2(g)+H2O(l)H2CO3(l)Carbonicacid
  • Carbon dioxide produces an acid while reacting with water and therefore are termed Acidic Oxide.

When Sulphur dioxide reacted with water it gives Sulphurous acid (H2SO3)

  • SO2(g)+H2O(l)H2SO3(l)Sulphurousacid
  • Sulphur dioxide produces an acid while reacting with water and therefore are termed Acidic Oxide.

Neutral oxide- it neither has acidic nor basic properties.

When Carbon monoxide reacts with water it produces Carbon dioxide and Hydrogen gas is released.

  • CO(g)+H2O(g)CO2(g)+H2(g)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is a neutral oxide as the products formed do not show either acidic or basic properties.

When Nitrous oxide(N2O) reacts with water Ammonium Nitrate (NH4NO3) a salt is produced again it does not show either acidic or basic properties.

  • N2O(l)+2H2O(l)NH4NO3(aq)
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a neutral oxide as the products formed do not show either acidic or basic properties.
