The Moon cannot produce its own light, whereas the Sun does. We see the Moon because the sunlight falling on its surface, which then gets reflected towards us. The position of the Moon changes due to its revolution around the earth. Due to this, the portion of the Moon reflecting sunlight towards us also changes, thus resulting in Lunar phases, or the phases of the Moon.
