Question

Choose the correct options regarding treading on tyres.

Solution

On a rainy day, treads help expel water which improves traction. These treads also help in increasing grip on soft surfaces by sinking into the surface. This can be explained using plowing effect where friction exists when a soft surface gets deformed and opposes relative motion. However, on hard surfaces where the advantages of the plowing effect are not seen, the presence of these treads reduce friction. Also, because of treading, less area of the tyres is in contact with ground.
