On 14th June 1964, the Government of India constituted the Ministry of Social Welfare in order to promote governance based on the model of ‘welfare state’. It is under this ministry that social welfare programmes and schemes are implemented nationally. The ministry and related departments take care of all the matters pertaining to nutrition and child development, social security and social protection, women’s welfare and development and so on. They operate at national and state levels.
