Classify the following reactions into
(a) Direct combination
(b) Decomposition reaction
(c) Displacement reaction
(d) Double decomposition
The reactions are - (i) Zinc hydroxide on heating gives zinc oxide and water
(ii) Zinc reacts with copper(II) sulphate to give zinc sulphate and copper
(iii) Zinc sulphate reacts with ammonium hydroxide to give ammonium sulphate and zinc hydroxide
(iv) Molten zinc at high temperatures, burns in the air to give zinc oxide.
(i) Decomposition reaction- Zinc hydroxide on heating gives zinc oxide and water
Zinc hydroxide a single compound decomposes into two simpler components zinc oxide and water, hence it is a decomposition reaction.
(ii) Displacement reaction- Zinc reacts with copper(II) sulphate to give zinc sulphate and copper
Zinc reacts with copper(II) sulphate to give zinc sulphate and copper is a displacement reaction. Zinc is more reactive than copper displaced copper from copper sulphate.
(iii) Double decomposition- Zinc sulphate reacts with ammonium hydroxide to give ammonium sulphate and zinc hydroxide
Zinc sulphate reacts with ammonium hydroxide to give ammonium sulphate and zinc hydroxide and it is a double decomposition reaction as the exchange of ions takes place.
(iv) Direct combination- Molten zinc at high temperatures, burns in the air to give zinc oxide
Zinc metal burns in air to form the white zinc(II) oxide, a material that turns yellow on prolonged heating. It is a combination reaction.
