Question

COCl2(g)CO(g)+Cl2(g);K1=0.329
2CO(g)+O2(g)2CO2(g);K2=2.24×1022
Calculate the equilibrium constant for the reaction given below from the data given above at 1000 K:
2COCl2(g)+O2(g)2CO2(g)+Cl2(g)

Open in App
Solution

The given reaction is :-
(I) CoCl2(g)Co(g)+Cl2(g)
K1=[Co][Cl2][CoCl2]=0.329(I)
(II) 2CO(g)+O2(g)2CO2(g)
K2=[CO2]2[CO]2[O2]=2.24×1022(II)
So, for 2COCl2(g)+O2(g)2CO2(g)+Cl2(g)
K=[CO2]2[Cl2][COCl2]2[O2]=K1×K2=2.24×1022×0.329
=73.696×1020
