Open in App
Solution

In the early vedic period, northern India was divided into sixteen mahajanapadas. They were either small kingdoms or oligarchic republics. In the later Vedic period, however, such small politica units were replaced by empires. Magadha became the predominant power in India and became an empire, first under the Nandas and later under the Mauryas.
