Sulphuric acid ( $H_{2} S O_{4}$ ) is referred to as oil of vitriol as it was obtained as an oily viscous liquid by heating crystals of green vitriol ( $F e S O_{4} . 7 H_{2} O$ ).

Sulphur trioxide ( $S O_{3}$ ) evolved, gets dissolved in water forming sulphuric acid ( $H_{2} S O_{4}$ ).

$2 F e S O_{4} .7 H_{2} O Δ ⟶ F e_{2} O_{3} + S O_{2} + S O_{3} + 14 H_{2} O$
(Green vitriol)
