Question

Compare the densities of solids and liquids.

Open in App
Solution

  1. As a rule, solids tend to be denser than liquids, because molecules can move past each other in a liquid, but not in solids.
  2. The particles of the solid are very close together, with very little space between them.
  3. A liquid usually contains particles that are still touching, but there are some spaces between them.
  4. That means they are farther apart.
  5. Solids are therefore denser than liquids because their molecules are more tightly packed.
