Question

Compare the difference in 1st and 2nd IP values of sodium and magnesium. Give appropriate reason.

Open in App
Solution

1st IP 2nd IP
Na 5.13eV 47.28 eV
Mg 7.6 eV 15.035eV
1st I.P of sodium is less than Mg. Because 'Na' has a single electron whereas 'Mg' has a pair of electrons. The single electron is to be removed easily. So its 1st I.P is less than Mg.
2nd I.P of Sodium is greater than Mg. Because Na+ has a noble gas electronic configuration, which is more stable. But Mg+ has a single electron which can easily be removed by applying less amount of energy than 'Na' 2nd I.P.
