Solution

The correct option is D

The explanation for the correct option

Option (D)

Heating of ammonium dichromate

On heating ammonium dichromate ((NH4)2Cr2O7), dichromate decomposes into nitrogen (N2), water H2O and chromium oxide (Cr2O3).

(NH4)2Cr2O7(s)N2(s)+4H2O(g)+Cr2O3(s)

Hence, heating of ammonium dichromate is an example of a ‘decomposition’ reaction.

Heating of zinc oxide with coke

By heating zinc oxide (ZnO) and coke (C) together we get zinc (Zn) and carbon monoxide (CO).

ZnO(s)+C(s)Zn(s)+CO(g)

Here, zinc gets reduced and carbon gets oxidized.

Hence, the heating of zinc oxide with coke is an example of a 'redox' reaction.

Therefore, ‘x’ means ‘decomposition’ and ‘y’ means ‘redox’.
