The carboxylic group of o-Toluic acid is converted to amide by treatment with phosphorus pentachloride followed by ammonia.
Amide group is converted to amino group by treatment with bromine in presence of caustic potash.
The amide group is then diazotized and the diazo group is replaced with OH to obtain o-cresol.
