Question

Compute the fractional change in volume of a glass slab, when subjected to a hydraulic pressure of 10 atm.

Open in App
Solution

The applied hydraulic pressure is 10atm and the bulk modulus of glass is 37× 10 9 N/ m 2 .

The bulk modulus of glass is given by the equation,

β= Δp ΔV V ΔV V = Δp β

Substituting the values in the above expression, we get:

ΔV V = 10atm× 1.013× 10 5 Pa 1atm 37× 10 9 N/ m 2 0.0027

Hence, the fractional change in the glass slab is 0.0027.
