Consider a boilied potato that has been carved out, and placed within a petri dish as shown in the figure below. The scooped out part of the potato contains 40% sugar solution and the petri dish contains 20% sugar solution. What would happen to the level of the 40% sugar solution in the boiled potato?
The level will fall because of diffusion
20% sugar solution would mean 80% water, while 40% sugar solution would mean 60% water. This time though, because the potato is boiled, the cells would be killed, and the cell membrane would break, and therefore the cells would be freely permeable. Therefore, sugar would move out from the region of its higher concentration, which is the 40% sugar solution, into the region of its lower concentration, which is outside the potato. This would be caused by diffusion.
