The Early Harappan phase (3300-2600 BC) was a mainly rural phase where some of the features resembled the later mature Harappan characteristics.

In the Mature Harappan phase (2600-1750 BC), a large number of urban centres developed throughout the extent of the civilization. These centres declined in the Late Harappan Phase (1700-1300 BC) and there was a return to rural settlements.
