GEF approved a grant of USD 15 million for the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem

(BOBLME) project, started by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2009, involving all eight countries along its coastline - Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. BOBLME project aims to promote sustainable fishing, reduce marine pollution and improve the lives of approximately 400 million people who live along its coasts.

Nepal and Bhutan (part of BIMSTEC) are not part of this program.
