Considering the duration of the menstrual cycle to be 28 days in a female, the mid-cycle would be day 14. This is the day when ovulation is most likely to occur. Ovulation refers to the release of the secondary oocyte with its protective layers out of the mature Graafian follicle.
The development of follicles begins early in the follicular phase. By day 6-7, one of the growing follicles becomes the dominant follicle and continues to grow till it becomes the mature graafian follicle. The Graafian follicle becomes ready for ovulation around day 14.
LH surge occurs one day prior to ovulation. It occurs on day 13. This leads to the rupture of Graafian follicle and the release of secondary oocyte on day 14.
But the levels of estradiol (estrogen) doesn't decrease around this time. In fact it increases. This can be seen clearly in the diagram given below.
