Genes which respond to specific stimuli and are expressed in specific cells are called luxury genes; they are not expressed all the time and show tissues specific variation in expression which in turn impart the difference in morphology and physiology to the individual. The luxury genes are also termed as regulatory genes. The genes which are constitutively expressed are called housekeeping genes.
