Group IIB sulphides are soluble in YAS and they react with yellow ammonium sulphide to form thiosalts.

These thiosalts reacts with HCl to form coloured precipitates.

As2S3 is yellow in colour and SnS is brown in colour.

(NH4)2SnS3+2HClSnS2+2NH4Cl+H2S

On the other hand, group IIA sulphides are insoluble in YAS
Hence, YAS can be used for the separation of group IIA and IIB precipitates.

Similarly NaOH can also be used for separation of group IIA and IIB precipitates.
