Question

Critical temperature for CO2 and CH4 are 31.1oC and 81.9oC respectively. Which of these has stronger intermolecular forces and why?

Open in App
Solution

Critical Temperature is given as
TC=8a27Rb
Where a defines the intermolecular attraction between the molecule.
Thus, more the critical temperature, more will be the attraction and less will be the repulsion.
As TC for CO2 is higher than TC for CH4, thus attraction or stronger molecular forces will be higher in CO2 .
