(a) Elements:
An element is defined as a pure substance made up of only one kind of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances any physical or chemical process. Elements are basic substances from which all other substances are made.
Eg: Gold, silver, diamond, graphite etc.

(b) Compounds:
Compounds are pure substances formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in a definite proportion by mass.
Eg: Water, marble, sugar, salt etc.
