An ion is a charged particle formed when an atom loses/gains electron(s). Eg: $N a^{+}, C l^{-}$ are the ions formed by the sodium and chlorine atoms respectively.

Cation: It is a positively charged ion. Eg: $N a^{+}$
Anion: It is a negatively charged ion. Eg: $C l^{-}$ ,

Compounds and their ions :
1. $M g C l_{2}$ : Cation: $M g^{2 +}$ and anion: $C l^{-}$

2. $C a C O_{3}$ : Cation: $C a^{2 +}$ and anion: $C O_{3}^{2 -}$
