Question

Define electric potential and potential difference qualitatively and quantitatively. What are the units of their measurement?

Solution

Electric potential:

  1. Electric potential is a point in an electric field which is the amount of work done in moving a unit positive charge from infinity to that point against electric forces.
  2. The electric potential (also called the electric field potential, potential drop, the electrostatic potential) is defined as the amount of work energy needed to move a unit of electric charge from a reference point to the specific point in an electric field.

SI unit of measurement: volts V

Electric potential difference:

  1. On the contrary, an electric potential difference between two points in an electric field is defined as the amount of work done in moving a unit positive charge from one point to another point against the electric force.
  2. Potential difference is the difference in the amount of energy that charge carriers have between two points in a circuit.

SI unit of measurement: volts V
