Solution

Electrolysis

  • The process of breaking down an electrolyte chemically on the passage of current is called electrolysis.
  • The process of electrolysis needs an electrolytic cell, an electrolyte, two electrodes, and a power supply.
  • A container generally made of glass, usually serves as an electrolytic cell in which electrolysis is carried out.
  • The liquid that conducts electricity in the liquid state and breaks up chemically during the process is called electrolyte
  • When an electrolyte breaks down into positive and negative particles, the particles are called ions.Positively charged ions are called cations and negatively charged ions are called anions.
  • Electrodes are conducting rods that allow the electric current to enter and leave an electrolyte. they are usually made of inert or non-reactive substances so that they do not react with electrolytes. electrodes are of two types: the negatively charged electrode is called the cathode, the positively charged electrode is called the anode.
