Question

define magnetic meridian , a freely suspended bar magnet of magnetic moment 0.8JT-1 is to be held nomal to the magnetic meridian at a place where the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field is0.4 gauss. How much external torque must be applied on the bar magnet in this orientation

Solution

Dear student,
The magnetic meridian is an equivalent imaginary line connecting the magnetic south and north poles and can be taken as the horizontal component of magnetic force lines along the surface of the earth. Therefore, a compass needle will be parallel to the magnetic meridian.

Torque =mBsinθHere the magnetic field is horizontal component of the earth's surfaceShould be alligned normally so θ = 90Convert Gauss into Teslaor τ =0.8×0.4×10-4 ×sin90τ = 0.32 ×10-4 Nm
