Racemic mixture:
When equimolar quantities of dextro and laevo
isomers are mixed, the resulting mixture is found to be optically
inactive due to external compensation. Such an optically inactive
mixture is known as racemate or racemic mixture. For example, when we
mix 1 mole of d−tartaricacid with 1 mole of
l−tartaricacid, the resulting mixture is optically
inactive and is called racemic mixture.
The IUPAC name of
CH3−CH2−CH3|CH−CHO is
2-methylbutanal. The parent chain contains 4 C atoms including aldehyde
group. Hence, it is named butanal. The numbering is started so that the
aldehyde C gets number 1. A methyl group is present as substituent on
second C atom.
