Limiting Reagent:
The reactant which gets completely consumed the course of the reaction is called limiting reagent.
For eg.
The balanced chemical equation is given as;
1PbS+4H2O2→1PbSO4+4H2O
Initial moles→5mol 18moles
and we have to calculate the maximum amount of PbSO4 being produced.
1mol of PbS reacts with 4mol of H2O2 to give 1 mole of PbSO4.
So 5mol of PbS will react with 20moles of H2O2
But moles of H2O2 is only 18
So H2O2 is the reagent which is consumed first and hence it is the limiting reagent,
4molofH2O2→1molofPbSO41molofH2O2→14molofPbSO418molofH2O2→184molofPbSO4−4.5molofPbSO4
If PbS was the limiting reagent, 5mol of PbS would give 5mol of PbSO4 but it is not so.
