Question

Define the statement "rest and motion are relative terms" with some examples

Open in App
Solution

Rest and motion are the relative terms because they depend on the observer’s frame of reference.
If an observer is at rest in his or her own frame of reference, but he may be moving in other observer's frame of reference. So if two different observers are not at rest with respect to each other, then they too get different results when they observe the motion or rest of a body.
Let the Earth like all the other planets including the sun are actually moving. so though everything in front or around you may seem to be at rest with respect to you, it is actually in motion if someone from the moon or some other planet sees it.

You can take another example
________________________

Let you are standing on a platform and see a train speeding past you. the train is definitely in motion with respect to you.now, think of a passenger in the same train..to the passenger the train in at rest.

---------------------------------

Thus this can be concluded that motion and rest are interrelated.
