Ascent of sap

Open in App
Solution

Ascent of sap:

  1. It is the upward movement of water and mineral salts in xylem vessels through roots to the tip of the leaves.
  2. The initial step in the ascent of sap is the entry of water into the root hair first by imbibition and then by osmosis.
  3. This water from the root hair passes into the xylem vessels through the cortex and endodermis.
  4. The water is then pulled to the stem and then to leaf veins and finally to the tips.
  5. The cohesion between the water molecules provides the necessary continuity to the water columns inside the plant tissue.
