Question

Define weight of a body.

Open in App
Solution

1. Weight of a body is the force with which the body is attracted towards the center of the earth.

2. Mathematically it is represented as follows: W=mg

where, Wweight of the body

mmass of the body

gacceleration due to gravity

3. So, basically weight is a force having both magnitude and direction. Hence it is a vector quantity.

4. The SI unit of weight is same as that of force which is newton (N).

5. Since weight of a body depends on the value of g, weight is not a fundamental property of a body as it may have different values at different places. It is because value of gvaries with location.
