Question

Derive an expression for the effective resistance of three resistances in series.

Open in App
Solution

Consider three resistors in series as shown, with resistances R1, R2 and R3 respectively

If V1, V2 and V3 are potential differences across them respectively, the total potential difference across the system of resistors,

V = V1 + V2 + V3

ie.,V = IR1 + IR2 + IR3 = I(R1 + R2 + R3) (1)

(Since the current through them is the same)

Let the three resistors be replaced by a single resistor of resistance RS called the equivalent or effective resistor.

Hence, for equivalent resistor, V = IRS (2)

From (1) and (2),

We have,Rs=R1+R2+R3
