Question

Derive the relation between the commercial unit of energy and SI unit of energy.

Open in App
Solution

  1. kWh is a commercial unit of energy. 1kWhis the amount of energy consumed at the rate of 1 kilowatt for 1 hours.
  2. SI unit of energy is Joule.

Calculating the number of joules in 1 kWh,

1kilowatthour=1kilowatt×1hour1kilowatthour=1000watt×1hour

But 1watt=1Joule1second………(i)

Substituting in equation (i)

1kilowatthour=1000Joulesseconds×1hour

As 1hour=60×60seconds

Thus, 1kilowatthour=1000Joulesseconds×60×60seconds

or 1kilowatthour=3600000Joules or (3.6×106J)

Hence, the relation between the commercial unit of energy and the SI unit of energy is 1kilowatthour=3.6×106Joules.
