Question

Describe an activity to demonstrate that the particles of matter are constantly moving.

Open in App
Solution

To demonstrate that particles of matter are continuously moving.

  1. Put an unlit incense stick in a corner of your class. How close do you have to go near it so as to get its smell?
  2. → Record your observations.
  3. → Now light the incense stick. What happens? Do you get the smell sitting at a distance?
  4. → Record your observations.

Observations

→ When the incense stick is unlit the temperature is low and the kinetic energy of the particles of incense is also low. Hence, they do not mix with the particles of air rapidly. That is why you have to go near the incense stick to get its smell. But when the incense stick is lit, the temperature rise, and hence, the kinetic energy of the incense particles also increases and the particles now move rapidly and thus intermix with the particles of the air rapidly. That is why you get the smell of incense even when you are sitting at a distance.

Conclusion

The particles of matter are moving continuously. As the temperature increases their kinetic energy increases and hence, they move even faster.,
