Describe an experiment to show that a gas expands on heating.

Open in App
Solution

Aim - To show that gases expand on heating.

Theory -

  • When any gas is heated, the gases gain energy and start moving very fast and move away from each other.
  • The opposite phenomenon takes place when gases are cooled, they come closer to each other and get condensed.

Requirements - a balloon, liquid nitrogen, container.

Procedure -

  • Take a balloon and partially fill it with air.
  • Dip the balloon in liquid nitrogen and note the decrease in size.
  • Now take the balloon out of liquid nitrogen and keep it at room temperature, note the increase in size.

Observation -

  • The size of the balloon decreases when it is cooled.
  • The size of the balloon increases when the temperature increases or it is heated.

Result - Thus gases expand on heating.
