Describe an experiment to show that air expands on heating.

Aim: To show that air expands on heating.
Equipment required: An empty bottle, a rubber balloon, a water bath and some water.
Procedure:
  1. Take a bottle containing air. Attach a balloon to its neck. Initially, the balloon is deflated. Place the bottle in a water bath containing boiling water.
  2. After some time has passed, balloon will inflate. Now, take the bottle out of the water bath and allow it to cool by itself.
  3. The balloon will deflate and eventually collapse.
Observation: The balloon inflate on heating and contract on cooling.
Conclusion: The above observation shows that air expands on heating.
