Some characteristic hormones in our body are:
Growth hormone: It is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland. It stimulates body growth and proteins, carbohydrates, fat metabolism also.
Follicle stimulating hormone: It is produced by the basophilic cells. In females, this hormone stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles upto ovulation and in males, this hormone stimulates development of seminiferous tubules and maintains spermatogenesis.
Thyroid stimulating hormone: It is secreted by special basophilic cells and promotes the growth and function of thyroid gland.
Adrenalin: It is secreted from the adrenal glands present on kidneys. It is known as fight or flight hormone and is rapidly secreted in response to any kind of stress in the body.
Oestrogen: It is a steroid hormone which is secreted by the ovarian follicles and influenced by follicle stimulating hormone. It is main female sex hormone and initiates the development of female secondary sex organs.
Progesterone: It is a steroid hormone which is secreted from the corpus luteum. This hormone causes temporary changes in endometrium lining of the uterus.
Insulin: It is a peptide hormone which is secreted from the pancreas and maintains a major role in the regulation of glucose metabolism in the body.
