Solution

The medulla oblongata is a structure found in the human brain. Its major function is to control autonomic functions (that are not in human control), such as breathing, respiration and heartbeat. It is also involved in body secretions, reflexes, swallowing, coughing, sneezing, etc. As the medulla oblongata performs various functions critical to the body, damage to this structure can prove fatal.
