Solution

Salivary Glands Gastric Glands
These are situated in the mouth. These are situated in the stomach.
They are made up of water secreting and mucous secreting cells. These are made up of chief cells, oxyntic cells or parietal cells and, foveolar cells
These secrete saliva that contains water, electrolytes, and salivary amylase. The chief cells secrete the pepsinogen enzyme. The parietal or oxyntic cells secrete the HCl and the foveolar cells secrete the mucous in the stomach.
The function of their secretion is to lubricate the food to allow chewing and swallowing and to digest the starch through the salivary amylase. The functions of their secretions are:
  1. HCl activates the pepsinogen to pepsin and also provide an acidic environment for the digestion of proteins.
  2. Pepsin is the main protein-digesting enzyme in the stomach.
  3. Mucous help in the protection of the stomach wall by the action of HCl.
