The East India Company faced certain difficulties in procuring products for exports. The main difficulty was in securing permission from the Mughal emperor to trade in India. The Emperor Jahangir first gave them permission from certain ports like Surat. Subsequently, as the Mughal empire weakened after Aurangzeb, they managed to obtain permission from the emperor to trade from larger areas like Bengal and the Carnatic. Even then, they faced a lot of resistance from local rulers like Tipu Sultan who prohibited trade with the British.
