When a boy was 7 years old, he was sent to Gurukul. He stayed there till he got educated.
In a gurukul, students had to memorise lessons that were taught orally. After completing their education, the students paid guru dakshina according to their means.
The students led simple and highly disciplined lives in gurukul. They helped their guru in many ways, like cleaning the house, drawing water from the well, gathering wood, and working in the fields.
Subjects taught in the gurukul were: Vedic Literature, grammar, astronomy, medicine, music, architecture and the art of warfare.
