Lab preparation method of Ether:
Sodium ethoxide is treated with ethyl iodide to obtain diethyl ether.
CH3−CH2−ONa Sodium ethoxide +CH3−CH2−I Ethyl iodide →CH3−CH2−O−CH2−CH3 Diethyl ether
This method is known as Williamson synthesis.
Reaction with phosphorous pentachloride:
CH3−CH2−O−CH2−CH3 Diethyl ether +PCl5 phosphorous pentachlorideheat−−→2CH3−CH2−Cl Ethyl chloride +POCl3 phosphorus oxychloride
