Question

Describe the osmotic relationship when a parenchymatous tissue is kept under following conditions
(i) in a hypertonic solution
(ii) in a hypotonic solution and
(iii) in an isotonic solution

Solution

i) IIf a tissue is placed in a hypertonic solution, water comes out of the cell by the process of exosmosis and cell becomes flaccid. It causes the tissue to shrink due to loss of water from its cell.

ii) If a tissue is placed in a hypotonic solution, water starts moving into the cell by the process of endosmosis. It causes the tissue to bulge out and so the cell becomes turgid.

iii) If a tissue is placed in an isotonic solution, there is no change in the amount of water between the cell and the solution and the shape of the cell remain unchanged.
