Solution

The process of decomposition of organic waste by rotting and converting it into manure is called composting ad the material produced after composting is called compost.

Compost can be produced by the following procedure:

  • Dug a 5 metre long, 1.5 metre wide and 1.5 metre deep trench.
  • Spread a layer of a mixture of refuse and waste for about 30 centimetre thickness.
  • Wet this layer with a watery mixture of mud and cow-dung.
  • Spread this second layer over the first layer until the heap is projected about half metre over the ground.
  • Leave it for about 3 months and sprinkle water over it at regular intervals.
  • Open it after 3 months and take out the material.
  • Rearrange it in heaps and cover it with a layer of soil.
  • Compost will be ready after 50-60 days.
