When we burn the waste to dispose it which releases fumes and other toxic substances, it is called incineration. The residue generation after incineration include 25 per cent ash that is deposited in landfills.

The usefulness of incineration of wastes are:

• Lesser landfills will be occupied as leftover ash covers lesser area.
• The heat released during the process of incineration and be utilised to generate electricity.

The precautions required in the process of incineration are:

• It should be carried out at high temperature.
• It should be carried out by the use of pollution control devices.
• It should be done away from residential areas.
