Question

Describe the role of stomata in the process of transpiration.

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. It is the process by which water is lost in the form of water vapor from the stomatal opening present on the surface of leaves.

Role of stomata in the process of transpiration:

  1. Stomata are the small pores on the surface of leaves that are in direct contact with the environment and carry out the process of transpiration.
  2. As the water is absorbed by the roots of the plants, it is transported to all parts through the xylem.
  3. Only a very small amount of water is used by the plants for the process of photosynthesis.
  4. The rest of the water is lost by the process of transpiration to keep the leaf surface cool and to maintain the continuous flow of water.
  5. This loss of water occurs through stomata, so stomata regulate the amount of loss of water by the plants.
