Laboratory method for the preparation of ammonia:
Ammonium chloride is heated with calcium hydroxide.
2NH4Cl+Ca(OH)2ΔCaCl2+2NH3+2H2O
Moist ammonia gas is dried over CaO (quik lime).
The reactions of ammonia with:
(i) Oxygen in presence of platinum at 800oC.
4NH3+5O2Pt−−800oC4NO+6H2O
(ii) Red hot copper oxide.
2NH3+3CuOΔ3Cu+3H2O+N2
