Question

Determine the solubilities of silver chromate, barium chromate, ferric hydroxide, lead chloride and mercurous iodide at 298 K from their solubility product constants. Determine also the molarities of individual ions.
The solubility product constants are:
Silver chromate, 1.1×1012
Barium chromate, 1.2×1010
Ferric hydroxide, 1.0×1038
Lead dichloride, 1.6×105
Mercurous iodide, 4.5×1029

Solution

(i) Silver chromate Ag2CrO42Ag++CrO24
[Ag+]=2s,CrO24=s
Ksp=(2s)2(s)=4s3=1.1×1012
s=6.5×105
[Ag+]=2s=1.30×104M
[CrO24]=s=6.5×105M
(ii) Barium chromate BaCrO4Ba2++CrO24
[Ba2+]=[CrO24]=s
Ksp=s×s=s62=1.2×1010M
[Ba2+]=[CrO24]=s=1.09×105M
(iii) Ferric hydroxide Fe(OH)3Fe3++3OH
[Fe3+]=s,[OH]=3s
Ksp=s(3s)3=27s4=1.0×1038
[Fe3+]=s=1.38×1010M
[OH]=3s=4.14×1010M
(iv)Lead dichloride PbCl2Pb2++2Cl
[Pb2+]=s,[Cl]=2s
Ksp=s×(2s)2=4s3=1.6×105
[Pb2+]=s=0.0159M
[Cl]=2s=0.0318MM
(v) Mercurous iodide Hg2I22Hg++2I
[Hg+]=[I]=2s
Ksp=(2s)2(2s)2=16s4=4.5×1029
s=4.09×108M
[Hg+]=[I]=2s=8.18×108M
