Total number of apples received by students $=5\times \frac{1}{3}$
$=\frac{5\times 1}{3}$

Number of apples teacher had $=4$

Total number of apples in the class$=$ Total number of apples received by students $+$ Number of apples teacher had

$=\frac{5}{3}+4=\frac{5}{3}+\frac{4\times 3}{3}$

$=\frac{5}{3}+\frac{12}{3}=\frac{5+12}{3}=\frac{17}{3}$
